2018 was the last season of the ST class in the now Michelin Pilot Challenge, it spelled the end of consumer cars in the series. TCR takes the place of ST as the secondary class for the series. TCR cars are developed by manufacturers and designed to meet the global TCR spec. But you can’t get cars for the series just anywhere. they can only be purchased from the manufacturer.
BMW decided not to develop a TCR MINI, despite LAP Motorsport’s willingness to do so. In fact LAP had at one point started development on the 4-door hardtop, and at another point indicated they would be developing the Clubman.
With the lack of a TCR MINI, the MINI JCW Team’s time in IMSA has come to an end. Many positives came from the team throughout their four year run, including winning at Daytona, and taking home the Manufacturers championship this season. But with no new development LAP Motorsports will be shifting gears.
LAP Motorsports will be fielding a two-car Honda Civic TCR team called “L.A. Honda World Racing” in the Michelin Pilot Challenge. While it makes us sad to see the end of the MINI JCW Team in IMSA, we wish LAP Motorsport all the best as they look to continue their winning ways.
