It was a beautiful day as the MINI JCW team took to the track for the opening race of the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge. Anticipation was high after great qualifying efforts, especially by car #73. But we weren’t two laps into the race before the #73 made contact with another vehicle on the front stretch.
From there on out it was one issue after another for #73 and #37. At one point car #73 was driving around the track with the rear hatch still open after a pit stop that had just been completed. Car #52 had the cleanest race but struggled to gain ground at times.
The good news is that the MINIs seemed to have plenty of speed. It was a pleasure to watch them rocketing by other cars even on the high banks of Daytona.
A big part of racing is not only having a fast car but staying out of trouble. If the MINI JCW Team can put together a clean race there’s no doubt they will be contending for wins this season.
